Come and learn to craft beautiful sustainably-harvested tropical hardwoods into long-lasting, hurricane resistant structures with Dave “The Timber Framer” Bowman!
What: The week will walk you through the process of making an attractive and strong carribean-stlye cabana, from sustainable timber selection to a traditionally-crafted 14x16’ frame. Learn the tricks of the trade with Dave “The Timber Framer” Bowman, career timberframer and proud member of the Timber Framer’s Guild. VISFI is proud to bring Dave to our farm to help spread a traditional and sustainable form of building. When coupled with truly sustainable forestry practices and well-thought designs, timberframing can make a small footprint for a house that can last twice as long as many modern-material homes, and resist high winds. This will be best exemplified on our island tours, when we visit old timber frames (on our way to the beach) that still stand on St. Croix after tens of major hurricanes and hundreds of years.
Where: Most of class will occur on the VISFI moist forest campus, except for timberframe tours and beach trips.
When: February 17-24th, 2007.
Who: All ages are welcome! Students under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a guardian.
Why: To teach and learn an environmentally and economically sustainable skill for those who wish to learn the art of traditional timberframing.
